A North Shore hamlet with a harbor, a university, and a village center built in 1941.
Stony Brook is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, on Long Island's North Shore. Stony Brook University and its hospital are here, and so are the harbor, Avalon Nature Preserve, and West Meadow Beach.
The LIRR station is on the Port Jefferson Branch, where trains east of Huntington are diesel. The Town of Brookhaven lists Stony Brook as a historic district, so ask if a house is inside it before you plan any outside changes.
In Stony Brook, I check three things before anything else: whether the house sits in the Town's historic district, the flood zone, and whether it's on a cesspool, a septic system, or a sewer. Each one can change what the home really costs to own.
